Travel Tuesday: Santiago's Best Hotel Restaurants

Just to mix things up a bit, we’ll forego the typical Travel Tuesday post, in which we tell you about a great day, weekend, or multi-day trip that you can take from various points in and around South America, to focus on other aspects of travel.  Traveling, in many ways, is the easy part.  Making sure you have a great and memorable time can often be more difficult.  But, as usual, we’re here to help.  So, for the next few weeks, keep tabs on our Travel Tuesday selections as we delve into the world of hotels, their restaurants, and more.

Hotel restaurants the world over are known for having mediocre, if not downright awful food.  Over-creativity and far too many things on the plate can often overshadow good taste.  However, in vacation destinations like Miami, the Cayman Islands, or other spots where tourism is as important to the local economy as everyday life, the offer from hotels can actually be much better, ensuring that guests are always satisfied and want to come back.  The same holds true for Latin and South America where, as the tourism and gastronomy industries continue to grow, hotel restaurants have often been the go-to for high quality food in the major cities that dot the continent.  Big kitchens, big budgets and a staff that’s always on duty allow for hotels to maintain a level of consistency that might otherwise lack where tourism isn’t as strong.

Santiago has not only ramped up its general culinary offerings in recent years, but as tourism becomes a viable business and more people than ever come to Santiago not just as a jumping off point for travels north or south, but actually as a destination, the hotel offerings have gotten considerably better.  Now, one of Latin America’s 50 Best restaurants is located at the W in Santiago, and Spanish superstar Sergi Arola has one of his namesake restaurants at the Ritz.  Below, check out our list of five top hotel restaurants that are helping prove that Santiago is more than just a layover, but a vibrant city full of delicious high-end and innovative cuisine.

The Singular | Merced 294 | Lastarria, Santiago (Forthcoming)

Though not open yet, when The Singular hits Lastarria later this year, the restaurant will undoubtedly be a game changer in Santiago.  Playing on the success of the Singular’s restaurant in Puerto Natales, in the far South of Chile, chef Laurent Pasqualetto will bring his locally-sourced approach to Santiago and give diners a taste of the region.  Known for using ingredients surrounding the Patagonian oasis like wild hare, sheep, and local vegetables, Pasqualetto plans to bring the same style of dining to Santiago.  Worth waiting for, the Singular could bring a whole new level to what Lastarria has to offer.
