Singularly Astounding in Patagonia

Exploring and embracing Chile’s rich industrial heritage at the Singular Hotel
By: OUTSIDE GO HQ

Named the top hotel in Chile and rated one of the Best Hotels in South America by Trip Advisor, The Singular Patagonia doesn’t even fit on the five star scale. Sitting on the shores of Last Hope Strait in Puerto Bories, Chile, the historical site has been retrofitted into one of the most unusual and hippest boutique hotels south of the equator. With breathtaking views and incredible access to the most popular park in Patagonia, this outpost is more than just a place to hang your hat.

Cultural Heritage
The Singular as it stands today is the brilliant work of Enrique Concha, the wonder-kid of Chilean interior design. Originally built and used as a cold storage plant in 1915, the building was the source of employment for hundreds of industrial workers. Securing its place in history, it was named a National Historical Monument in 1996 after years of sitting empty. Soon thereafter, the original owners began work on what would be a ten-year project to restore and transform the plant into a luxury hotel. Concha has blended industrial stark design with Chilean warmth, utilizing rich textures of tin and wood. A Victorian engine room, tannery, and blacksmith shop still exist on the property for you to explore a piece of the past.

Sustainability
The Singular is inspired by the pristine beauty of Patagonia to be mindful of its carbon footprint. When the property was rebuilt, it was awarded LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The hotel also owns two private land reserves consisting of over protected 37,000 acres for wildlife and flora to thrive.

Access and Activities
Located in an ideal area next to world-famous Torres del Paine National Park, The Singular serves as an exquisite base camp for any adventure. Sail around fjords and explore glaciers, sea kayak among flamingos, gallop on horseback through Patagonian fields, and more. With such unlimited access to this remote and beautiful part of the globe, you’ll run out of energy long before you exhaust your itinerary. Good thing you have an XL room complete with a 19-foot window overlooking the fjords to recharge in.

Chilean Cuisine
The soul of this Patagonian gem is their warm bar and restaurant areas, offering up the best locally sourced fare in Chile and under the culinary wizardry of Laurent Pasqualetto. For more informal typical Chilean fare, we recommend the intimate El Asador (Spanish for “The Grill”), revolving around the open wood-burning grill, where meats such as lamb, guanaco, rabbit and beef are prepared with other distinctive delicacies (created, as always, with the region’s best ingredients). Yumm.
